Fighting back pain with a newborn baby - How FMS & PT helped me

I'm so excited to share this client's success with you all! The best side of being a personal trainer is to be able to help people to really improve their daily life.

Monique contacted me two weeks ago, because she finally gave in to her very good friend's nagging, who is an old client of mine.

To make a long story short, Monique started to have bad back pain while she was pregnant with her first son. Who's been there know that it won't really go away, in fact as you are getting bigger the pain gets worse. After giving birth to her baby the pain didn't stop, as she had to hold her son most time of the days. She tried to train alone in the gym, she tried physio therapy but nothing seemed to work until now.

So first we did a Functional Movement Screen to see where the problem was coming from. On this test the maximum score you can get is 21. Monique's result was only 13, which is quite a low number. After getting the result, we started to address the problem immediately with some corrective mobility exercises.

As you can see on this picture, Monique got a 'red light' on the active straight leg raise exercise, which shows some lack of hip stability. That's where we had to start from. When a client has a red light on this exercise, for the trainer it tells to avoid any kind of posterior chain exercises such as deadlift or KB swings.

In 4 sessions, (let me repeat again, in FOUR sessions) we managed to get her number from score 1 up to score 3 on this one!!!

It is a great success, what is more, now she is able to carry her son and change nappies without any back pain for the first time after months.

I cannot wait to see where we can improve from here together, to get stronger and more healthier.

If you are struggling with similar problems, don't give up. There is a solution. First we need to find the source of your problem then we can work on it together. Don't get used to living with pain!
